Security Licences in Tasmania
In Tasmania, individuals or businesses who offer or perform the following security activities are required to hold a Security Agent Licence:
- Security Guard activities
- Crowd Control activities
- Inquiry Agent activities
- Commercial Sub-Agent activities
Security Agent Licences
There are two types of Security Agent Licences: Agent Body Corporate Licence and Agent Individual Licence. An Agent Individual Licence does not have any specific requirements. However, in order to be eligible for An Agent Body Corporate Licence, an applicant must:
- Nominate a manager who holds a Tasmanian licence
- Ensure that each company manager or director undertaking licensed activities meet the criteria for a licence, as each individual listed as a director will be assessed as if they are applying for a licence.
Both a body corporate and agent can apply for the following activities to be added to their licence:
- Crowd Control
- Security General Guarding
- Security Guarding with a dog
- Security Guarding with a firearm
- Body guarding
- Monitoring Room Operator
- Commercial Agent
- Inquiry Agent
In the case of a sole trader, the applicant does not have to hold an Agent Body Corporate Licence, since the Agent Individual Licence allows an individual to operate a business and work for themselves.
Employee & Provisional Licence
All employees of security businesses are required to hold an Employee Licence, as they perform security activities that requires appropriate training and qualifications. An individual with an Employee Licence must only work under an employer who has the relevant security activity endorsed on their licence. Full training must be completed before an applicant can apply for a licence. However, an individual can apply for a Provisional Licence that is valid for a year.
Cost of Security Licences
An Agent Body Corporate Licence and an Agent Individual Licence costs $696.15. An Employee Licence costs $183.60. It is mandatory that an applicant pays for a criminal history Police check ($45) and the taking of fingerprints ($75) with each application.
