Quick Guide to Security Licensing in ACT

Security Licences in ACT

Businesses participating in the security industry must hold a Security Master Licence. Employees of these businesses must hold a Security Employee Licence. These licences are required in order to perform the following tasks:

  • Installing, maintaining, monitoring, repairing or servicing security equipment
  • Giving advice about security equipment
  • Patrolling, guarding or protecting property
  • Acting as a crowd controller, bodyguard or security consultant
  • Selling security equipment
  • Carrying out surveys and inspections of security equipment

A Security Trainer Licence authorities the applicant to provide training in relation to security activities. In order to obtain a Security Trainer Licence, the applicant must have completed training courses prescribed in Section 9 of the Security Industry Regulation 2003.


Cost of Security Licences

In ACT, the price of a licence is dependent on the term and any additional sub-classes. A Security Master Licence that is eligible for a year is $762. The same licence with a 3 year term costs $2,286. In the case of a Security Employee Licence, a single year term costs $118, and a 3 year term is $354. Sub-classes are only applicable to Security Employee Licences, and are $14 each. With each application, an individual must provide an original or certified copy of a fingerprint-verified Police Certificate. This carries an additional fee of $45.
